Facts about Italy - RELIGION in Italy

The largest religion in country is Catholic Church. 88% of Italians are Roman Catholic, but only one-third of these described themselves as active members. Today, church plays a role in the nation's political affairs, although it is no longer officially the state religion.

There are also other Christian groups in Italy:

· Eastern Orthodox Christians (700,000) including 470,000 newcomers

· Greek Orthodox (180,000),

· 550,000 Pentecostals and Evangelicals (0.8%), of whom 400,000 are members of the Assemblies of God,

· Jehovah's Witnesses (235,685),

· Waldensians (30,000)

· Seventh-day Adventists (25,000)

· Mormons (22,000),

· Baptists (15,000) (plus some 5,000 Free Baptists),

· Lutherans (7,000),

Methodists (affiliated to the Waldensian Church) 5,000.
